The difference between working with children and adults
|
Many issues and difficulties we bring to therapy as adults are found to be rooted in the experiences we had in childhood.
Some of these problems can begin surfacing during childhood/adolescence and young people come to counselling presenting with a wide range of issues, including bullying, family breakdown, bereavement, anger and anxiety, self harming and eating disorders. There is a wealth of evidence that shows children and young people are less likely to suffer from serious mental health problems in later life if they receive support at an early age. The main difference between adult and child work is in the way they express themselves. Mostly children and young people do not have the cognitive skills to be able to verbally express their thoughts and feelings and therefore find it difficult to communicate their worries in therapy. With the use of play and art materials children are given a medium that is natural to them and through their play they are able to express themselves and work through particular worries that maybe affecting their wellbeing and development. Adults can also benefit from using art materials particularly if the work becomes very painful. Art creates an opportunity to express deep emotion that we often cannot understand or put into words. |
